As part of our weekend of Grand Opening festivities Michael Thompson – City Councillor will be at The Outlet Saturday at Noon.

Michael Thompson is Chair of Toronto’s Economic Development and Culture Committee, Vice-Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board and the City Councillor representing Ward 37, Scarborough Centre.

Now in his third term as City Councillor, Michael Thompson has earned a reputation as one of Toronto’s hardest working political leaders.

Michael’s commitment to economic development is longstanding. In his first term in office, he spearheaded the creation of the Wexford Heights Business Improvement Area and established a Job Fair that annually brings thousands of job seekers together with dozens of employers. He maintains a widespread network of business relationships that has helped to enhance business retention, promote growth and increase private sector employment. His active engagement with business has helped speed the launch of new business ventures, resolved business/residential conflicts and gained business participation in a wide range of community-building initiatives. In 2010, thanks to his persistent salesmanship, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the world’s largest student run professional association, held its annual conference in Toronto, bringing more than 10,000 young engineers (and millions of dollars) to the city.

A believer in the critical value of culture as a builder of strong communities, Michael co-founded the Taste of Lawrence Avenue East Festival, which brings together tens of thousands of people each year to experience local performing arts and cuisine. He also created the “Scarborough Rocks” community image building campaign, which emphasizes Scarborough’s unique cultural blend.

July 5-7 are the days you will want to visit The John Bead Outlet and our neighbors!

In our Outlet we are featuring special Grand Opening Pricing.

We are also participating just up the road in the Taste of Lawrence.

The John Bead Outlet is sponsoring a creative and interactive booth in the children’s area at this year’s Taste of Lawrence weekend where we will be attempting to create Canada’s longest charm bracelet!

We have 100+ meters of chain we need to fill with charms, sequins, beads, buttons, pom poms and other fun embellishments.  We’ll be using string, ribbon and jump rings to attach everything to the chain.  No skills required!  You’ll see how easy it is to make something fun and wearable using some of the craft and jewelry making supplies found in the Outlet.

Hope to see you at one or both events this weekend!

You might be wondering why fishermen (men and women) flock to The Outlet.

They come for the plastic beads!  I didn’t realize that these little beads are used as bait and seem to attract fish to the line.

My online search indicated that bright colours are a good idea…and we sure do have bright beads!

These would be visible under water for sure!

You’ll even find glow in the dark beads in this section!

When you visit the new Outlet you will see a new area at the front of the store.  This is our brand new cutting area.

You can buy fabulous chain by the meter.  It can be cut on the spot for you!

The cutting table has also been installed to cut specialty materials by the meter as well.

Did you know we sell mylar, metallic foils, leatherette and other trims?

I would love to find a project to use this with!

With our new Outlet comes a new spokesperson!

This is Betsy and she is slowly making her way onto all of the Outlet’s printed and online materials.

Isn’t she just adorable?  She is modeled after a very special Betsy.

This is the original Betsy, the John family matriarch.

I see her every time I come to John Bead!  She works four days a week for the company.  When I asked Mike John yesterday why it is that Betsy still comes to work he answered quite simply “she just loves all the people here and our customers.”

So if you see this lovely lady in the Outlet, say hello to Betsy!
